What Is Rhode Island Telephone’s SIP Trunking?

A SIP (session initiation protocol) Trunk is basically a phone call that is routed over the internet using VoIP technology. SIP Trunks are used in conjunction with an IP-PBX and are usually used of as replacements for traditional PRI or analog circuits.

What are the advantages?

Will I need more bandwidth?
SIP Trunks are virtual circuits delivered over the Internet. Depending on the number of SIP Trunks purchased, and the amount of excess Internet connectivity, a business might consider purchasing more Internet Access. An active phone call consumes about 100k of bandwidth.

Can I keep my existing phone numbers?
Yes, you can keep all of your existing phone numbers, and should you ever decide to change your service to another carrier, you can take those phone numbers with you. Please check your contractual obligations with your existing carrier before considering moving to SIP trunks or any other carrier!
